Help please. Notifications have never worked

Me and about five co-workers all bought propane and none of us have ever been able to get notifications to work. They work for leaving/entering the room, however they do not work at all for "new messages." They are enabled in our settings and simply do nothing... neither sound nor growl works. We are currently on 0.9.5 - please advise.

    Hi Ben,

that's pretty troubling - it's been a very long time since there was a genuine bug in the notifications code but the behavior you describe (working for enter/leave but not for anything else) does sound like something might be going wrong.

First off, you do know that any messages you speak will not generate a notification for yourself right? Only incoming messages from other participants are eligible for notifications.

Second, if Propane has focus, you only get notifications for the currently selected room if you've enabled "Notify me even for the currently selected room".

And thirdly, you need to watch out for the fact that you can override the notification preferences for a given room via the Room->"Edit Room Notification Settings" menu. Sometimes it's easy to lose track of the fact that you turned off a particular room's notifications so until we've got this sorted-out please make sure the room you're testing with is using the defaults (via that menu).

If none of that manages to explain why you're not getting notifications then can you please attach a screen-capture of your notifications preferences (both standard and message-alerts) so I can see if I can track this down.

    Regards, Trevor

    Sorry,

I also need to know - are the unread-counters reliably incrementing for incoming messages (both in the Dock and on Propane's chat tabs)?

    Hi Trevor,

I've triple checked all my notification settings and snapped some screenshots for you. They have never worked for me, nor any of my co-workers. Some of my co-workers are even refusing to buy propane because they don't work. For months, we have just assumed that it was likely because propane was still in beta and that these were known issues. Apparently they aren't. Seems odd that noone is having these issues except the circle of people I know that are using it.

Also, I had no idea that the dock (or the tabs) were supposed to have unread counters for messages (as I have never seen these either.) The only time I see unread counters is when people join/leave the room.

Thanks for your help tracking this down. If we figure it out, I know of a few people who may be happy enough to buy propane ;)

    Hi Ben,

looks like a genuine problem - especially since you're not getting unread counters incrementing. I have a small hunch about what might be at work here - so I sent you an invite to my campfire so we can try something out.

I totally understand if you don't have time right now, but if you do, please join in. (check your spam-traps if you don't see the invite message yet).

    Regards, Trev

For anyone else watching this thread, the source of the problem has been found - if you prefix your name with an asterisk then notificaions fail.

No idea why yet, but at least I know what's triggering it.

I can't imagine it is a common problem, so I appreciate the time your going to invest in getting a fix out for this. I know several people on my team that will be very happy about this and a few more who will likely purchase propane once its solved.

Great app and great support. Keep up the good work man!

    Hi again Ben,

while you wait for the fix to be released, there is a (slightly ugly) workaround.

On the "Message Alerts" tab in Notification Settings, uncheck "Alert me of messages containing my name".

To make sure you're still alerted when someone says your name, add an alert phrase of:

    (?i)\bYour Name\b

And make sure you check the 'rexex' checkbox beside it. The regex you've created is basically, a case-insensitive match of your name surrounded by word boundaries.

It turns out that I was not regex-escaping your name when creating the regex to satisfy the "Alert me of messages containing my name" match.

    Regards, Trevor

Excellent Trevor! Thanks for the workaround. Works like a champ now. It is great to have working notifications :)

    Cheers!
