Conference Calling

Just found out about propane after seeing the post about conference calling and I'm thinking of switching over to it.

Could you tell me a little bit about the conference calling and how it works? (I've used it from within campfire already). I can't see it documented in the API, so how did you get it working?

    Hi Tim,

Propane isn't (currently) an API Client for Campfire - it's a site-specific-browser and doesn't use the API at all.

You're correct that there's no way to drive conference calling from the API.

If that's something you're trying to figure out how to do (from an external script/application) then I'd recommend opening an issue at - at least so that it's on their radar.

    Thanks Trevor,

So did Propane automatically support it as soon as it was added to the standard version of Campfire? Given that it is simple a dedicated browser instance?

It sounded like it was an announcement as if the feature had been added, so I was a little confused.

I guess instead of calling it an SSB, it's more accurate to describe Propane as a client that uses XPath, css-selectors and JavascriptCore as the 'API'. Even though Propane is running the Campfire web UI, it's heavily modified at runtime.

So I definitely had to add support because, given Propane's runtime mods, there was no way to initiate conference calls and Propane's notifications system needed updates to understand the conference-started and conference-finished messages.

I think the reasons 37signals made a big deal out of the change is because a) they use Propane, b) they're quite proud of Conference Calling, and c) it took me a bit longer than usual to respond to a new Campfire feature (Propane updates generally arrive within hours of new features, this one took a number of days).

    Regards, Trev
