The Propane purchase page is not clear as to how updates are handled. If I buy several Propane 1.x licenses now (for my office), will I have to upgrade to Propane 2.0 later this year? How long are updates free? Indefinitely? One year?

    Hi Jeremy,

my plan has always been that anyone who purchased Propane 1.x in the 12 months prior to the release of Propane 2.0 will get a free upgrade.

I haven't yet decided on the upgrade price to charge for other 1.0 users though.

The Mac App Store adds an unpleasant dimension here. Many people expect free or discounted upgrades to software they purchased directly, but they also want to switch their purchase over to the MAS. That's not something that the MAS currently supports.

So if I do decide to put Propane 2 on the MAS, all users that want to switch their purchase over to the MAS will be charged no matter how recently they purchased directly from me - there's no escaping it.

If I do put it on the MAS, I plan to run an introductory price equivalent to the 1.x->2.x upgrade fee.

But it's important to note that whatever happens, users eligible for a free upgrade will not be forced to switch to the MAS in order to upgrade to Propane 2.

I hope that clears things up.
