Changing nick?

Hi,

New to Campfire (had been using IRC for YEARS before finally deciding to make the switch).

Is there a command (or some other way) to change your nick from within Propane? Basically to use to indicate status (such as user|brb, etc).

Thanks!

    Hey,

for a very short time there was a feature in Campfire that allowed you to set a nickname but 37signals decided that it reduced clarity so they removed it.

Your specific use-case is pretty much exactly what they're trying to avoid - people changing their nicknames to suit a mood or situation.

I can't say that I completely disagree with them but I sure do wish I could be known as just "trevor" in Campfire without affecting my name in Basecamp as well...

Sorry I don't have better news for you.

Ah, thanks. Our team uses different nicks as an easy way to indicate availability (since we all work remotely).

Failing that, any way to change status (other than quitting)?

    Thanks again.

    Unfortunately no.

I think the fact that there are persistent backchat histories means 37signals feel there's no need to idle like you do in IRC (for fear of missing something) so to them "in the room" == available.

On my (distributed) team we tend to idle all day, even when we step away from the keyboard for an hour or so. There's only 8 of us though so we tend to know what everyone is up to anyhow.

I've been tinkering with some ideas that would make this a lot smoother in Propane but they require me switching over to the Campfire API and that's still a work in progress (my colleagues like to refer to it as the "Duke Nukem Forever Edition of Propane").

Again, sorry I don't have a better response.
